POLLUTION, A GLOBAL SCOURGE

Dernière mise à jour : 31 août 2019

For many years now, the pollution in the world have been increasing day by day. This is a real scourge that people face all over the world.

Some trashes carried by students.

In some countries, mobilization is general. In Tahiti, French Polynesia, on October 24, 2018, the reporters of the newspaper THE MUNDO OF EXPRESSION had the opportunity to witness the action of the collective "Nana Sacs Plastiques" (which is not an association but a group of volunteers) at Paul Gauguin High School. The goal was to mobilize the youngest people against pollution that is increasing more and more in Polynesia and around the world. Volunteers high school students and as well as members of the group carried out a garbage collector around the high school for about an hour. A lot of wastes have been found, such as straws, plastic bags, bottles…

This is a picture with the students of Gauguin high school.

"Nana Sacs Plastiques" was created in 2016 when these volunteers understood that plastic was not recycled in Polynesia. Their main goal is "to fight the single-use plastic bag," said Moea, a volunteer with the group. In relation to Polynesia, Polynesians would degrade their environment more and more. That would be due to "the consumer society that makes you buy more for ease," says Moea. The group created a trade charter in French Polynesia of which 110 signed it. In fact, when shop owners sign the charter, they engage to stop distributing plastic bags. Raising the awareness of the youngest is one of the main actions of the collective: "The future is young people" said Moea.

Question: What message would you like to convey?

Moea: " We must fight to save the planet. Every gesture counts."

Today, "Nana Sac Plastique" is followed by more than 10 000 subscribers from around the world on social networks. The collective hopes to continue to expand around the world.

We were able to interview two high school girls (anonymous) volunteers to collect waste:

Q: Why do you participate in this action?

1st girl: "For me, it was fundamental to help a friend, the organizer, and later I thought it was a good action."

Q: What do you say to yourself when you see all this garbage on the street?

2nd girl: "I think a lot of people do not think about the environment and throw their trashes anywhere."

Q: What message can you send to other high school students?

The two girls: "Stop polluting the environment, would be the best thing to do, we are responsible for our pollution."

Pollution destroys the atmosphere as the years go by: according to a report by the WHO (World Health Organization), 600,000 children under the age of 15 die every year in the world from respiratory infection because of air pollution. In 2015, 422,000 people lost their lives in Europe due to the concentration of fine particles in the atmosphere, sorting their waste, not throwing them in the wild should be a reflex for all inhabitants of this planet. Let's not forget that all of our waste that is then dumped into the ocean is destructive to all marine animals. Scientists predict that in 2050 there will be more plastics than fish .... "2050 it's tomorrow”, said Moea.
