The Legend of Remus & Romulus

As Ancient Rome became a powerful city, Romans invented a legend to explain why they had the right to rule everyone else and how the Roman civilisation had been established. According to the Romans, the city was founded by the mythological twins Romulus and Remus (Romolo and Remo in Italian).

Who were they ?

They were the two sons of a mortal princess named Rhea and Mars the Roman god of War. The king of the city where the twins lived called Aumilius was scared that someday Romulus and Remus would overthrow him and take the power. That’s why he abandoned them in a basket on the Tiber River in order to kill them. However far from dying, the twins lived an incredible adventure and were found by a female wolf called Lupa who decided to feed them as her own offsprings. After that they were raised by a shepherd and as they were gradually becoming adults, Romulus and Remus decided to found their own city . However, they disagreed on the place where they should start the construction of the future city. Romulus had chosen the Palatine Hill, and Remus wanted to start on Aventine Hill. After failing to reach a consensus Remus, had a violent argument with Romulus and murdered him. He gave the city his name and called it Rome.

Under his leadership Rome became a powerful city, but as Romulus grew older his regime became more autocratic until he disappeared in mysterious circumstances.
